Des is a retired journalist who volunteers his time to assist bereaved families organise the funeral of a loved one. He explains why he came to be involved and how the work of the team can range from assisting in the practicalities of putting together a funeral mass to leading prayers at the graveside. Funeral teams provide extra support for priests under increasing pressure as their numbers decline across the diocese.

Death has been a part of Des’s life from a very young age. When Des was only four years old, his father tragically died.  He shares how this profound event shaped his attitudes to death and dying from then to now.
