PODCAST: The Funeral Consumers Alliance explain ways to create an affordable and dignified funeral.

I talk to Josh Slocum, Executive Director of the Funeral Consumers Alliance. This is a not-for-profit organisation in the United States dedicated to protecting consumers rights to a fair, dignified and affordable funeral.

When it comes to funerals – both Ireland and the US share many of the same issues. Funeral poverty is a growing problem in Ireland as the cost of a funeral can come in much higher than a family anticipated. With the result that families can end up paying off a funeral debt for years to come.

Josh shares his insights into how the American funeral industry works and has great advice on saving costs. He says pre-planning your own funeral in advance and knowing a budget before you start are two ways to start. The Funeral Consumers Alliance has been continuing to lobby hard for funeral service providers to disclose prices online. Only 25 per cent of US providers currently do this. It would be another huge benefit to help control funeral costs for families.
